Meet Simon, MSc Construction Management Level 6 Apprenticeship
Simon our Senior Construction Consultant is studying for the Level 6 MSc Construction Management Apprenticeship alongside his role. Read on to find out more about his experience so far:
How have you found the apprenticeship so far?
I am enjoying the course so far and the flexible online working surrounding it. The support from UCEM is very good with 2 live lectures a week and huge e-library and forums too assist with assignments. I wondered how I would find education after so many years out of the academic world but the support has been great. Submitting work on the portal is straight forward and any questions have been answered promptly. Balancing 20% of my working week with home study is possible and I am currently researching my 3rd and 4th assignments.
What has been your biggest learning so far?
I am studying 2 modules as part of my master's degree, Sustainable & Innovative construction methods and contrasting them with traditional methods has been interesting. Examining different building contracts and their clauses is new to me and has certainly given me an eye for detail.
How do you use your apprenticeship learnings in your day to day role?
As I have just moved from Facilities to Construction the course has proved a great overview of the construction industry. A lot of terminology has been broken down and a better grounding has bred confidence as I start out in my new job role.
What are some examples of the off the job training you have completed?
I always try and connect to the live lectures if my work diary allows. If I do miss the odd lecture, then I can play back the recording at any time. I find it best to start some of the coursework while the lecture is fresh in my mind. By the end of the week, I have usually made time for an hour or two here and there to complete 8 hours in work time.
What are the three words you would use to describe your apprenticeship journey?
Enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding.
