Meet Kuldip

Kuldip was looking for a career change when he came across a role in one of our RDCs. It’s a move that’s not only increased his confidence but allowed him to develop new skills. Particularly when it comes to making decisions.

Where were you doing before you joined Lidl?

I did a degree at Birmingham University in business management and then worked at Birmingham Airport as a passenger sales agent. After four years, I wanted a career change and that’s when I applied for Lidl and I’ve been here two years.

What does a Desk Clerk at Lidl do?

I look after the stores with any stock issues or delivery problems. I also deal with the drivers and our hauliers who take the stock to the stores. We manage the routes on a daily basis, planning what time each store will get their delivery. We take in mind what store restrictions are in place, because some stores are restricted by night deliveries, so we have to keep that in mind. We also manage the recycling department and deal with any problems that arise. We do weekly and monthly reporting as well.

What do you enjoy most?

I like new challenges and there are new challenges every day. It’s about overcoming those challenges and how you deal with them.

What do you think are the biggest challenges?

Making decisions on the spot, which is not something I had to do in my previous job. When you're the person in charge, you’ve got to make the right decisions. You get to deal with different kinds of people.

What’s your biggest achievement?

Lidl has brought about a change in my confidence. I've acquired new skills and qualities which I didn't have before.  In the past I was hesitant to make decisions and now I’m the person in charge of shifts, so I'm the one who is going to make the decisions.

What’s the team like?

We’re headed up by a Team Manager, then we have three Assistant Team Managers, five Desk Clerks, and then we have transport systems who help on a daily basis. It's great - We've got a good team and there's always a buzz and good atmosphere, and we all get on together. We work as a team to make sure everything's done together, and everyone's credited as a team. I know I'm working with people I can trust, support and leave tasks to.

Has working at Lidl lived up to expectations?

It has massively, I've learned a lot of things. There is always training and support and our ATMs support us all the way.

What’s surprised you about working here?

Lidl is a company that really looks after their employees. They go the extra mile to listen and then take action.

What makes Lidl different?

The way they go about things, the structure and how they deal with their negatives; they act on it straight away.

Why would someone want to come and work at Lidl?

It's a challenging job and you get to learn a lot. It's fast- paced - there’s lots going on, but it’s exciting at the same time. It’s fun as well, so you enjoy your job. You get rewarded and there’s opportunity.

What does the future hold for you?

I want to progress and go far. That's a big thing for me as a young person - I’d like to move up to an Assistant Team Manager and hopefully, one day, to be a Team Manager.

Can you give four words to describe Lidl?

Exciting. Passionate. Team-building. Well-established.
