Life At Lidl

What hours will I be working?

Typically you’ll be working between 40-47.5 hours per week depending on your position. In return for your hard work and commitment you’ll be rewarded with fantastic benefits, recognition and progression potential.

If I get the job, when do I start?

It you're joining one of our programmes you'll start in September 2018. Plenty of time to have a good holiday between university and starting with us! If you join us directly into a role, you will begin on the 2nd Monday of the month you have agreed with the department who you are joining.

Where can I expect to be working?

We’re a UK-wide business but it very much depends on your programme or role. For a part-time roles during university or direct entry graduate roles we have locations all over the UK either in our stores, warehouses or offices. If you join our Graduate Management and Retail Placement Programmes, you would be based in one of our regions across the UK, whereas our Junior Buying Programme is primarily based in our HQ in Wimbledon. You can find the location of any opportunity listed in the relevant job advert.

The Opportunities

Do Lidl offer short term internships?

Unfortunately we do not offer short term programmes or internships. We would always encourage you to apply for our Retail Placement Programme, where you can gain real skills, development and future career opportunities over a 48 week period. Even if your university doesn't 'offer' this as an option you should always ask the question as deferring your 3rd year can often be an easy and worthwhile option.

Is there a guaranteed job at the end of the programmes?

There is not a guarantee of a role at the end of any of our programmes. The end goal of the programme is left open to enable flexibility of location and role for you and the business.

Can I work for you part-time during uni?

Of course. You can work part-time either in warehouses, stores or offices where there is a part-time vacancy advertised. Oh... and you'll get 10% in store, thats 10% off your weekly shop! To find a full list of locations and roles please visit the job search function at the top of the page.

How many positions do you have available?

As many as we can fill. Our growth as a business means we need to recruit c.9,000 each year and with this comes plenty of opportunities across graduate programmes, management level roles and more junior roles throughout the business.

The Requirements

What degree classification do I need to apply?

Here at Lidl we are looking for a diverse and talented range of graduates and students to join the business. This year, and going forward, we have removed any requirement for a degree classification from all of our roles. Essentially you don't need a 2:1 or 1st in your degree to be eligible to apply for our business, we believe that our selection process gives us and you the best opportunity to learn about your strengths and development area but importantly whether we are right for each other. Helping you to know whether Lidl is right and also helping us maintain the very high calibre of students that join us each year.

Does Lidl sponsor international student visas?

As a business we do not provide visa or work permit sponsorship. We ask that you already possess a valid full time UK work permit or visa before you join us.

When do I need a driving license?

For some of our roles a full UK/EU driving license may be required. This should be obtained by the time you join the business. If you are unable to drive for any reason, reasonable adjustments can be made in the role meaning you won't need a license if you are unable to obtain one.

Do I need to speak German?

As a German company having the ability to speak German is always helpful. For some roles German language is essential, but for the majority of our opportunities it’s not.

The Application Process

When are your assessment centres?

If you are applying to one of our programmes, assessment centres will be held between December & February. Exact dates will be provided to you in advance. For our other roles, our assessments are ad hoc and can be held throughout the year.

Where are you assessment centres held?

Our assessment centres are held throughout the UK at a range of accessible locations and will vary depending on the region or location where the role you have applied to is based. Details of exact locations will be provided to you well in advance so you can plan their travel.

What are the deadlines for application?

All of our deadlines for application are listed on each one of the webpages for the programmes or role adverts themselves. Make sure you get your application in with good time as we receive a large number of applications and often our roles fill up very quickly.

Can I apply to more than one role?

Yes. You can always apply to more than one role with the business however we would always advocate you doing some research around each opportunity and working out which one is most suitable and attractive to yourself. It's always better to focus on the quality of your application rather than the quantity of applications.
